Zantac

Zantac contains the active ingredient ranitidine, which is a type of medicine called an H2 receptor antagonist. Ranitidine acts in the stomach to decrease the production of stomach acid.

Zantac works by blocking histamine H2 receptors that are found on the cells in the stomach lining. A natural body chemical called histamine normally binds to these receptors, causing the cells to produce stomach acid. By blocking the H2 receptors, Zantac prevents histamine from binding to them. This stops the cells from producing stomach acid.

Stomach acid is produced in the stomach as a normal part of the digestive process. Normally the linings of the stomach and duodenum are protected by a layer that resists acid attack. However, if this layer is damaged, or large amounts of stomach acid are formed, an ulcer can develop on the lining of the stomach or duodenum. This is called a peptic ulcer.

Acid produced in the stomach can also sometimes flow back into the food pipe. This is called gastro-oesophageal reflux, and can cause pain and a burning sensation known as heartburn. It can also irritate and damage the lining of the oesophagus, causing a condition called reflux oesophagitis.

By reducing the production of stomach acid, Zantac can be used to treat all these and other conditions. It stops excess acid flowing back into the foodpipe and can be used to relieve heartburn symptoms associated with acid reflux. It also allows the oesophagus to heal in reflux oesophagitis.

By reducing the amount of acid in the stomach and duodenum ranitidine relieves the symptoms of indigestion. It also allows peptic ulcers to heal, and prevents them from recurring. Zantac can be given together with antibiotics to help eradicate bacteria called Helicobacter pylori from the stomach. These bacteria can contribute to the formation of peptic ulcers. Ranitidine helps create an environment in the gut in which the antibiotics can be more effective at killing the bacteria.

Zantac can also be used to prevent and treat peptic ulcers that can occur as a side effect of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as diclofenac.

Zantac is also used to depress stomach acid production in various other conditions. It is used in varying doses and for varying lengths of time depending on the condition being treated.

Dosage

Adults
Active Duodenal Ulcer
The usual starting dose is 150 mg 2 times a day or 10 mg (2 teaspoonfuls) 2 times a day. Your doctor also might prescribe 300 mg or 20 ml (4 teaspoonfuls) once a day, after the evening meal or at bedtime, if necessary for your convenience. The dose should be the lowest effective dose. Long-term use should be reduced to a daily total of 150 mg or 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls), taken at bedtime.
Other Excess Acid Conditions (such as Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome)
The usual dose is 150 mg or 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) 2 times a day. This dose can be adjusted upwards by your doctor.
Benign Stomach Ulcer and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
The usual dose is 150 ml or 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) 2 times a day. Once an ulcer has cleared up, a single bedtime dose is prescribed to maintain healing. Symptoms of GERD generally improve within 24 hours after the start of therapy.
Erosive Esophagitis
The usual dose is 150 mg or 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) 4 times a day. Maintenance dosage is 150 mg or 10 ml (2 teaspoonfuls) twice a day.

Children
Duodenal and Stomach Ulcers
For children 1 month to 16 years of age, the recommended dosage for initial treatment is 2 to 4 mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight per day twice daily up to a maximum of 300 mg per day. For long-term maintenance of healing, the recommendation is 2-4 mg per 2.2 pounds of body weight once daily up to a maximum of 150 mg per day.
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and Erosive Esophagitis
For children 1 month to 16 years of age, the usual daily dosage is 5 to 10 milligrams per 2.2 pounds of body weight, divided into two doses.

Older Adults
People with kidney problems, such as some older adults, typically are given a lower dose. During the therapy with Zantac, the doctor is also more likely to monitor your kidney function if you're over 65.
