Clarinex

Clarinex is an antihistamine. It relieves the symptoms of hay fever (sneezing, runny nose, and itchy, watery eyes), and may help treat hives and associated itching of the skin.

Allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria are common conditions that adversely affect quality of life. Histamine plays an important role in the pathogenesis of both conditions, and antihistamine therapy is recommended.
Desloratadine, the major active metabolite of loratadine, currently is approved by the FDA for use in patients with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria. Clarinex is significantly more effective than placebo in reducing seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria symptoms, including nasal congestion. It appears to have a prompt onset of action in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria. Clarinex also is safe and effective in patients with concomitant seasonal allergic rhinitis and mild to moderate asthma. How the efficacy of desloratadine compares with that of loratadine and other second-generation agents remains to be determined.
Clarinex has a favorable safety profile. It is unlikely to cause somnolence and does not prolong the QTc interval or impair psychomotor performance or driving ability at recommended dosages. Desloratadine appears to be less likely to interact with other drugs than fexofenadine.

Dosage

The recommended dosage of Clarinex is 5 mg once daily. However, 5 mg should be given every other day to patients with hepatic or renal impairment.
