Altace
Altace contains the active ingredient ramipril, which is a type of medicine called an ACE inhibitor.
Ramipril works by blocking the action of a compound in the body called angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). Normally ACE produces another compound called angiotensin II, as part of the body's natural control of blood pressure. Angiotensin II causes blood vessels to constrict and narrow, which increases the pressure within the blood vessels.
As Altace blocks the action of ACE, it reduces the production of angiotensin II. This means that the blood vessels are allowed to relax and widen. The overall effect of this is a drop in blood pressure, hence ramipril can be used to lower high blood pressure.
The reduced pressure within the blood vessels means that the heart doesn't have to work as hard to pump the blood around the body. This means that ACE inhibitors such as ramipril can be used to improve the symptoms of heart failure, where the heart is not pumping as efficiently as it should be. Altace has also been shown to improve survival in people who are diagnosed with heart failure after suffering a heart attack. Altace is usually used in combination with a diuretic medicine to treat heart failure.

Dosage
Adult

High blood pressure
For the patients not on diuretics, the usual starting dosage 2.5 milligrams, is accepted once daily. If Altace proves unsufficient, the doctor can then add diuretic.
Heart attack and stroke prevention
The patients usually receive 2.5 milligrams once per day within the first week. The dosage then is increased to 5 milligrams once per day during following 3 weeks, and to whole 10 milligrams daily for long term. The doctor can recommend to divide each dosage in two smaller, if you have high pressure of blood or recover from a recent intimate attack.
Heart failure after a heart attack
